Speculation ends as Colby's body found
By Hugh Davies, Washington

  • William Colby obituary

WILD speculation over the fate of William Colby, 76, the former CIA director, ended yesterday as his body surfaced in a Maryland river 20 yards from where his capsized canoe was found just over a week ago. The official conclusion now is that for some reason - choppy water, or perhaps a heart attack or stroke - he fell from the craft as he went for a moonlight paddle.

While there was no hint of foul play in his disappearance, his computer was left switched on and there was a half-eaten dinner on the table. His clandestine background as an agent in Saigon, plus the upset he caused by sacking the CIA's legendary counter-spy, James Jesus Angleton, caused rumours to fly.
