Whitewater Body Count

Clinton, Yes!

Open road to oblivion for disconnected Dole

PRESIDENT Clinton seems to be sweeping back to the White House, but he may find trouble waiting on the doormat when he arrives.

A respected legal magazine has published what it calls "highly persuasive" evidence that Paula Jones, 30, was telling the truth about being sexually harassed by him at a hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas, five years ago. A 13-page analysis of the case by Stuart Taylor, the former legal affairs correspondent of the New York Times, said those who have made Miss Jones a pariah need to look at the facts.

Karen Dillon, editor of the American Lawyer magazine, said the author reached his conclusions after painstaking and detailed investigation. Taylor said that he voted for Clinton in 1992 and his first reaction to the case was that Miss Jones was a liar. Now, he says, he is not so sure, given "impressive" details from six witnesses of the woman's distress. He pointed out that none of the witnesses has testified because of the president's success in delaying the case.

Debra Ballentine, one of the six witnesses, said Miss Jones came to her at her work desk, looking upset. "She said, 'You are not going to believe what just happened to me'." Then she gave details of the alleged encounter. Miss Ballentine added: "I said, 'You need to go to your boss straight away'. She said, 'I can't. They're good friends'. I said, 'You need to go to the police'. She said, 'I can't. They took me up there'."

State Trooper Danny Ferguson, Mr Clinton's bodyguard at the time, was alleged to have escorted Miss Jones to the hotel suite.

Taylor said that Pamela Blackard, Miss Jones' best friend, saw her minutes after she left the room. She said: "I could see real far away something was wrong. It took her a while to tell me about it. She was upset, kind of shaky, and had to get her breath."
